Which name do you like best (for a boy), Oleander? Leander? or Lysander?

lysander definitely... B/C if I saw it written down and had no idea that it came from a midsummer nights dream i would still be able to pronounce it semi-correctly...
Oleander sounds like an old ladies name...and i can see nicknames that could come from Leander..like Leannie or lee
Reply:Of the three, leander is the best. Of course, all three are gonna get him teased from kindergarten through high school, but if you have to problem with that, then go for it.

Lysander, again, feels feminine - probably because the logical short form, Lys, is undeniably a girl's name.
You might consider Evander. It has a lot of flair, but is undeniably masculine, and shortens to Ev, Evan, Van ... all quite nice choices for a son.

Reply:My last, late Husband's middle name was Leander, His older Sister picked it out for him when he was born. He just despised it all his life. Pick a name for the uniqueness and originality you hope your child will embrace thoughout their life or will aspire to.

My dog isn't eating. Could it be and oleander leaf?
He hasn't been eating and he looks very weak. Also, his eyes are very droopy. 'm taking him to the vet very soon. But, what are the side effects for a dog eating an oleander leaf?

For those who have read and seen White Oleander?
I'm not being lazy but I cannot finish reading White Oleander. It is FAR too depressing and I have to compare/contrast the film and book. The film is better because there aren't any detailed sexual episodes between Astrid and anyone else but in the book there is. It angers/saddens me that this has to happen to a 14 year old girl. I myself have had similar things happen to me and I do not want to finish this or else I will kill myself, seriously. So if anyone has read the book and watched the movie, some information will be helpful. Thanks

She relies solely on Ingrid and has trouble fitting in at school. From the beginning, Ingrid appears to be a caring mother, but the reader also sees that she is self-centered and somewhat cold-hearted. Above all, Ingrid lives by the maxim "Never let a man stay the night."
However, Ingrid breaks her rules with a man named Barry Kolker who was initially not her type. Astrid watches as Ingrid and Barry become more and more involved, then she witnesses her mother's heartbreak when he is revealed to be a horrendous womanizer. Ingrid poisons Barry with the juice of a white oleander. She is charged with his murder and sentenced to over thirty years in prison. She promises her daughter that she will come back, but this doesn't happen. So begins Astrid's journey through a series of foster homes, where she encounters a variety of worlds and people.
The first foster family is that of Starr, a former stripper and drug addict. She has two children of her own, Carolee and Davey, as well as a boyfriend, Ray. Despite a culture that is rough around the edges, Starr could be labeled a "trailer park" Christian. This home, which seems different although suitable at first, is the first of many failures. Despite being fifteen years old, Astrid has an affair with Starr's fifty year old boyfriend, Ray. Suspicious and needy, Starr converts back to her old habit of heavy drinking. One night, after loudly accusing Ray of having sex with the foster child, Starr turns a gun on Astrid.
Although suffering some broken bones and stitches from the shot, Astrid is not fatally injured, and after recovery, her next home is with the Turlocks. Ed and Marvel are an average, cold couple, the parents of two young children. In their home, Astrid becomes an unpaid babysitter. While taking the kids to the park, she begins to smoke marijuana (likely a reminder of Ray) which she bought by trading sexual favors with local teenagers. As an escape from Marvel's wrath, Astrid befriends the Turlocks' next-door neighbour, a beautiful African-American woman named Olivia Johnstone. Astrid admires Olivia's beauty and her hedonistic lifestyle, although she knows that Olivia, as a woman of complete independence, will never think the same of her. Olivia is a prostitute by profession and is hated by the Turlock family. One night Astrid snuck out of the Turlock house to see if Olivia was home but was attacked by dogs on the way there, leaving her with scars. Astrid's association with Olivia leads to her being expelled from the Turlock household after accidently falling asleep at Olivia's house one night.
Next, Astrid ends up in the home of a Hispanic woman named Amelia Ramos. Amelia is an interior designer, originally from Argentina, and lives in Hollywood, with a huge, elegant house. Amelia has a son, but unfortunately, he has AIDS and the girls don't see him much. The other foster girls in the house are all Latino and are racist towards Astrid. Besides being a white girl, she has pale skin, light blue eyes, and white-blonde hair. However, all the girls in Amelia's household are treated the same. They are fed dinner, but for the most part, Amelia keeps a lock on her fridge, so they starve in the mornings. She even recommends a friend to take in girls, because they are "easy money." Astrid starves to the point that she stops menstruating. She resorts to eating unfinished lunches from the garbage at school. Finally, with the help of a social worker, she is removed from Amelia's household.
With the next family, Astrid's fate seems to change. She becomes the companion of a lonely young woman, Claire Richards, an actress with a workaholic husband, Ron. Loving but weak, Claire does everything she can to ensure Astrid's comfort. For once, Astrid has a regular schedule, is doing well in school and pursuing the art she loves. All the while, Astrid continues corresponding with her mother in prison, but Astrid becomes increasingly bitter towards Ingrid. She settles easily into life with Claire. With Ron, however, this fate takes a turn that will ultimately be tragic. Ron is, perhaps, a well-meaning man, but he is as neglectful of Claire as she is obsessive over him. Claire suspects that Ron is having an affair, because of his frequent trips which he claims are for business purposes. Astrid watches their fights grow worse and as Ron makes constant trips away from home. Claire falls deeper and deeper into depression. Claire also communicates with Ingrid, whom she admires greatly, and Ingrid convinces her that Ron is indeed having an affair, although she hardly knows Claire or Ron. Later, Ingrid tells Astrid that deceiving Claire is too easy, "like drowning kittens." At Christmas, Claire commits suicide by overdosing and taking pills. This leaves Astrid stuck with Ron. Ron lets Astrid stay, but Astrid declines and decides she'd be better off in an orphanage of sorts, MacLaren Children's Center (known as Mac), than with him.
Astrid meets a boy named Paul in the children's center, and when they become friends (much to Astrid's opposition at first, due to the fact that she wanted to be reclusive) people start speculating that they are a couple and mocking them.

As a reflection of her first foster home, she ends up sleeping with Rena's boyfriend, Sergei (although Astrid is in her last year of high school by this point).
Meanwhile, Ingrid has begun to build up a following of fans and admirers from prison, who all believe she is innocent. Ingrid and her lawyer begin to build up a case to get Ingrid released from prison. However, their case depends on Astrid -- if she testifies that Ingrid did not murder Barry, Ingrid would probably get out, but if she testifies the truth, Ingrid could not win her case. Astrid realizes that she is in a position of power over her mother, and tells her that unless she answers some of her questions, she will testify against her.

Reply:Believe it or not Oleander is one of those bushes/trees that can be trimmed almost anytime of the year. They are so hardy and hard to kill. Most plants the ebst time to trim is in the late spring or early Fall, but this type can be trimmed almost anytime except for the dead of winter...
Reply:Oleanders are evergreen shrubs that can be pruned basically anytime of the year. The best time is when they are not in bloom; so now is one of those times. Cut back to desired height and let the spring flush it with new growth and produce the desired look. In Nevada wait till March or April to feed with a good balanced plant food that is high in phosphorous which produces blooms and fruit on plants. Follow manufacturers recommendation.

Reply:Believe it or not Oleander is one of those bushes/trees that can be trimmed almost anytime of the year. They are so hardy and hard to kill. Most plants the ebst time to trim is in the late spring or early Fall, but this type can be trimmed almost anytime except for the dead of winter...
Reply:Oleanders are evergreen shrubs that can be pruned basically anytime of the year. The best time is when they are not in bloom; so now is one of those times. Cut back to desired height and let the spring flush it with new growth and produce the desired look. In Nevada wait till March or April to feed with a good balanced plant food that is high in phosphorous which produces blooms and fruit on plants. Follow manufacturers recommendation.

I'm looking to purchase a gift for a dear friend. She's about 20 years old and not really in to reading. She loved the movie The Notebook, and that's why I'm thinking Nicholas Sparks. But lately I've been hearing thoughts that I should purchase White Oleander by Janet Fitch for her. I want her to get into reading, and be able to cuddle up with a book she's going to lose herself in. I'm a 21 year old male buying this book for someone very special in my life. The other book can always come at a later date, but since this is my first purchase for her in this category I want it to be special and something she will remember. Which book do you think is best suited for the occasion, and why? Thank you

May I suggest Stardust by Neil Gaiman, it is an incredible book and he is an amazing writer that has the capability of making her love to read. Here is a short summary:
Stardust is the story of a young lad, Tristan, who falls in love and promises his object of affection (Victoria) that he will find her that falling star which they both saw fall nearby, and believing that he will actually win her heart when he brings her back that star. In order to do this, Tristan goes to the guarded gate through to the 'Faerie Land', on the other side of the wall of the town.

Reply:Okay, I'll be totally honest here....Nicholas Sparks is a little too cheesy for my reading tastes(although many love his stuff). I did read and enjoy White Oleander. Very good, but depressing, book. If this is a present for someone you're interested in romantically, I'd probably go with the mushier Sparks.

I think it tells a very interesting story and what i like most about the book is the writing seemed almost poetic to me. The way certain settings, characters and emotions were described was really beautiful to me and captured things that i think a lot of narratives just don't. (also i don't know if youre aware but this book was turned into a movie also not too long ago)
It is also a very unique story about a difficult relationship between a mother and daughter and a young woman trying to find herself desptie difficult and sometimes abusive situations. If that is the kind of story the person you are shopping for can relate to...it may abe a better and more inspiring choice.
Another thing to consider is if you are trying to encourage her to take up reading which book will open more doors for future reading. Nicholas Sparks has a ton of books most of which (from what I undenderstand) have similar writing stylye, theme and plots. Also there is a sequal to the Notebook that your friend might really like especailly if she liked the movie then the book.
As for the other author I know she just came out with another book that has recieved some critical praise but I havent read it or know anyone who has yet so I don't know enough to recommend it.
Good luck getting your friend into reading...it can be a difficult task but once they do its great fun to have another person you can share reading lists with and talk the books over with. Hope this was helpful

i read it when i had jsut broken up with a "love of my life" boyfriend. i was devastated and a bit broken.
that book made me realize that i was still a whole person whether i was with someone or not. it helped me find ME again and i embraced it.

as for nicholas sparks...well, i haven't been able to get into his books. i loved the notebok, the movie, however, i tried reading the notebook and the wedding and i just couldn't finish them.
white oleander is a phenomenal book, however, it's not romantic and flowery. if you want a book that is romantic and flowery and something that will still knock her socks off, then get her "memiors of a geisha". the movie could never do it justice and i am still dumbfounded that it was written by a man. of course, it was based on what was told to him by an aged geisha, however, he really portrayed a woman's spirit.
based on what you stated in your question and details i would get her "memoirs of a geisha". it picks up quickly from page one (if i remember correctly), and it is romantic yet exciting and powerful.

Do I cut back my snow burned oleander?
I have a couple of oleander bushes that got badly snow burned during this past winters crazy storms. They are still green at the bases with new growth but the tips are completely dead. My question is is do I trim the bushes all the way back or just the tips or just leave it alone. I live in zone 8

You will find the stems are damaged as well as the leaves. Oleanders are very tough, in my area people regularly chop the top half the bush away to encourage lush bushes.
The dead bits won't recover. Just cut all the dead looking stems back to where they are green and healthy, don't worry if the leaves on the green stems are dead. If the prune is quite severe don't worry it will recover. Good luck

The oleander plants are very tall and thick. They have been cut back many times, hoping they would stay short for a while, but they grow like weeds, which I think they are, and they need to be permanently stunted or killed. Thanks for your help.

The oleander needs to be dug out. Remove the crown of roots and that should prevent it from coming back. If this is a irrigated area you may still may see some sprouts form time to time but you can just chop those out.
If the stumps have some fresh juicy new growth, you can easily kill them with a shot of glyphosphate herbicide (i.e. Round-Up). If the growth on the stumps is old and mature leaves, then soak the stumps deeply and wait another week or two until you have some lush fresh growth - the herbicide does not work well on old leaves, only on fresh new leaves. Add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap, plus 2 tablespoons of a fine granular plant fertilizer to each 1 gallon of glyphosphate solution. The soap will help
the herbicide to stick better on the leaves, rather than running off onto the ground where it will do no good - the fertilizer will stimulate the leaves and stems to take up more of the herbicide. You may need to hit it twice - first time, then wait until those stems brown and die.
Be aware that all parts of the oleander are HIGHLY POISONOUS. DO NOT BURN the debris from a dug-up oleander as the smoke from burning the limbs will make you sick %26amp; may even be fatal. Make sure you wear gloves when handling any part of this plant.

I have many oleander plants that provide privacy in my backyard, however they are poisonous (I have a curious 2-year-old) and they are growing a bit out of control. Activities where she can put others first (esp. people in worse circumstances, charities, etc.) will do best to heal any residual wounds.

Can the effects of it be reversed while theyre sick/ I know people who get bit by spiders like black widows can be given a drug to take the poison out of their system. I watched "white oleander" the other day and it made me think of this question, just curious.

The reason I ask, is that I just spend about an hour cutting back my oleander trees and something got in my eye. I quickly washed it out and took a shower. However, after cleaning up, I sat down and felt extremely exhausted like I couldn't even get up. Now, I feel a bit better and called a doctor, he said that you have to eat it and lots of it inorder for it to affect you in the way it says on the internet. Many gardeners are exposed to it and they aren't affected.

Can you transplant an Oleander?
I have a white oleander that I'd like to transplant. It never bloomed this year, most likely because of lack of sun. Can they be transplanted safely? It is about three feet high. Is it best to transplant now, or wait until the spring?

Can you transplant an Oleander?

I am watching an oleander die?
because of a recent infestation of oleander caterpillars. It is distressing, quite distressing, the hedge isn't even in my yard. They weren't here last year but have arrived this year and don't seem eager to go away. I don't like to kill anything. Anybody else have this problem?

I wouldn't worry. I don't think anything can kill an oleander. They are toxic to mammals. Didn't know they had any worm pests.
Trucks run into them and light them on fire in the middle of the freeways here in California. Doesn't even phase them. They just grow out again next year.

Reply:They are very poisonous but so are a lot of garden plants just be aware as horses have died when given grass cuttings that contained leaves but they are pretty ,smell sweet and can be trained to bush form or small tree. I grow some in pots also have one growing in yard they are tough as I am not a great gardener and they do not require much water. Mine have self seeded from the neighbourhood some councils also grow them as pavement trees or in median strips between roads. I think they are easy to propagate by just cutting a piece and planting but quicker solution is a nursery ring around to find them,size and price so good luck

How do you get rid of Oleander plants?
We moved into a house that has some out of control oleander plants. We also have a dog so I'm worried about the fact that they're poisonous. I've tried cutting them and digging the root out but I guess I did it wrong because they all came back. Does anyone know the best way to get rid of oleander plants?

Laura mercier creme oleander blush, what colour can i define my cheeks with this colour?
I really like the Laura Mercier Oleander Creme Blush, however i like to define my cheekbones by putting a darker shade (usually bronze) under my cheeks to highlight my cheeks.
however this is a light creme colour, i dont want it to look stupid with a too dark of a shade, anyone got any ideas?

you could try just some simple bronzing powder. lancome star bronzer is really good or if you want to stick to laura mercier you could try her bronzing duo.
to apply, suck in your cheeks and look into a mirror to better see your cheekbones. using a large makeup brush, apply a light bronzer powder in a sweeping motion directly below your cheekbones. start at the apples of your cheeks, near your nose, and lightly sweep the powder up toward your temples and hairline, creating an illusion of a shadow below your cheekbones.
smile into the mirror to further define the apples of your cheeks and apply a light pink or rose blush in a circular motion to help them stand out against the bronzer. add a light shimmer for an extra glow. Apply a cream highlighting shimmer with your fingers or makeup sponge or a powder with a blush brush. put this only on the apples of your cheeks and be careful not to add too much--a little goes a long way here.

A bush similar to the Oleander?
We recently just bought this house and the front yard is huge! So on one side of our yard it's open with a long wooden fence seperating it from our yard and the back of our neighbors yard (corner house)! So we thought it would look really pretty to plant oleanders sorted out along the fence to hide it! Well since we just had a baby and we do have a dog, we didn't think it would be a good idea since the oleander is extremely toxic! so what's the next best bush close to that or similar looking?

Help! My oleander tree is turning brown. I live in Atlanta. Is it zoned for this area?
I own a oleander tree that has started to turn brown due to the cold weather. I bought it nearby, but I'm not sure that it's zoned for this area. I'm not sure why they would sell it here if it isn't. Any advice on what to do about it turning brown, or is it doomed?

If you bought it locally they usually sell variety's that will grow in your area. Can you phone the nursery that you bought it from and inquire about it's care. You live in an 8 zone and most are suppose to be in a 9-10 zone. I would try digging the tree up if it is still alive and put it inside in a pot for the winter. Lots of people have them in Canada but they are a large house plant during the winter and only put out in the spring.

Reply:Sorry, but oleanders are desert plants, and will die if they get too much water. I live where it never gets below 20F, and it is very arid. (southern CA)
If it is frost damage, you can hack it back. I would wait until after the last frost. People here cut theirs back to the ground, with about 10 inches left on the stems. They come back like gangbusters.
Reply:I have had 20 foot tall oleanders in Arizona, and the desert can get very cold, particularly 40 years ago, when we had snow in several years. No matter how cold it got I don't recall that they ever noticed.
They will need a lot less water in the winter, and even in the desert we did not water them (though they were near enough to the grass to gotten some water from there) so you might make sure you are not over watering them.
They grow fairly easily from a stick stuck in the ground so even doomed is not so doomed.

Reply:Sorry, but oleanders are desert plants, and will die if they get too much water. I live where it never gets below 20F, and it is very arid. (southern CA)
If it is frost damage, you can hack it back. I would wait until after the last frost. People here cut theirs back to the ground, with about 10 inches left on the stems. They come back like gangbusters.
Reply:I have had 20 foot tall oleanders in Arizona, and the desert can get very cold, particularly 40 years ago, when we had snow in several years. No matter how cold it got I don't recall that they ever noticed.
They will need a lot less water in the winter, and even in the desert we did not water them (though they were near enough to the grass to gotten some water from there) so you might make sure you are not over watering them.
They grow fairly easily from a stick stuck in the ground so even doomed is not so doomed.

What are some good project ideas to offer a class reading the book White Oleander by Janet Fitch?

Another idea: The main character goes through several different 'personality' phases. The students could come up with poems or songs or something that represent each different phase.
The students could create little suitcase art pieces (like the girl does at the end of the movie, if you need a visual) that represent A) the phases of the girl's life, B) the different people she lives with, C) anything else you find interesting.
I love this kind of stuff. :-)

When is the best time of year to transplant an oleander from a pot to the ground? The tree is 3 yrs old, and has stopped growing, it still blooms, but has not grown in height at all. I think its too big for its pot.

you can plant it right now. dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper. planting too deep can cause problems for the plant in the future. if the soil is hard or does not drain well, use gypsum in the bottom of the hole. gypsum helps to loosen compacted soils, and is available in garden centers. water in well as you back-fill to avoid air pockets around the root ball. with the extra soil, build a small retaining well about the same diameter as the hole you dug. as the soil on the surface becomes dry, fill the area with water and let it soak in. deep watering is best for establishing strong healthy plants. use a balanced fertilizer(15-15-15) as directed

I'd plant in spring in a sunny spot, and give it regular garden watering until it is established (don't overwater just keep the soil moist). Most plants respond well to a seaweed extract when newly planted, it stops transplant shock, and encourages root growth, but oleanders are not that fussy.
Oleanders can get frosted but take temperatures down to 20 deg F at my place. Just trim of the damage in spring. They respond well to quite hard pruning. Your plant may be a minature they only grow to approx 3 ft, and most regular plants in a garden situation never grow much above 12ft.
Reply:first off, its not a tree, its a large evergreen shrub that is used in landscape. and if you put it in the ground, i advise you to keep it as a hedge or a topiary..because they can get to be20-30ft tall

Oleander plants?
we have several oleander trees and started to notice that the leaves started turning brown and dying, it would then jump to the other trees and so on and so on. I thought it was some type of disease and trimmed them down ( way down) now some are coming back healthy but others are still brown, does anyone know what this can be and what I can treat them ? any suggestions would be appreciated

Its hard to say what your problem may be without having a little more detailed info, but I will try to give you my professional opinion and you can decide if it applies.
Providing your oleanders have not been subjected to any kind of cultural stress, such as pesticide phytotoxicity, salt burn (salinity) in the soil, severe drought, or freezing temperatures, a possible cause could be what is called "Oleander Leaf Scorch" (Xylella fastidiosa) which is a xylem infecting bacterium that is spread by certain leafhoppers (insects) while feeding, primarily the glassy-winged sharpshooter. The leaf margins or tips of the leaves including the edges appear scorched, turn yellow, then brown, and dry out. These symptoms can appear at anytime of the year but spread rapidly when the weather starts to warmup. The reason some of your plants appear to be more infected than others may be due to the fact that you have two or more different cultivars (varieties) or flower colors planted together. Some cultivars are less succeptible than others. Some plants will only live about 2 yrs once the disease is discovered and others may last for 3-5 yrs. There is no known cure for this disease once it gets established inside the plant! By pruning them heavily, you have temporarily supressed the visual symptoms. The new growth will appear healthy for a while, but will eventually go back to looking diseased and brown. The only thing you can do is to get on a scheduled spray program to control the leafhoppers and stop them from feeding on your plants. Also, the only way to detect this Xylella fastidiosa bacterium is to do an "ELISA" test, which must be done by an agricultural laboratory. Sorry to bring you this negative info, but I'm letting you know what you may be dealing with here. Good luck...

Oleander Help?
Last year I bought an Oleander, and in the fall I cut a shoot off so I could have a 2nd tree. It is growing quite tall, however the main trunk is not thick enough to support the height without the dowel I have tied to it. How do I get the trunk to thicken and support the tree?

The terminal bud is the growy bit at the top - you want to cut the main stem higher than some of the side branches - once you remove the top, those side shoots will become active and start forming side branches. Also give it more sun, that is one reason it is concentrating on height - it thinks there is no reason to make side branches because it has not gotten above the surrounding greenery to the sun yet. Time and fertilizer will thicken the stem - time, fertilzer and more light!!!

Oleander with burnt looking leaves?
my oleander is having some problems. one, i know it isn't getting enough sun, two, it got a bit frost bit on the lower branches (had it bagged on top) and now it looks like its, well, dying. I want to save it as it is one of my fav.s. So it's leaves were a deep green and shiny or waxy looking and now they are very dull, browning, some in spots some the whole leaves and they have black withered things coming from where flowers would otherwise be budding. THe leaves actually curl and look like they have been scorched.
WHat could be causing this
what should i do?

I waited, and in spring I did cut back the dead stuff after I detected new growth starting to show. It came back slowly and now it's fine. Also, my neighbor had oleander that was getting really brown. He discovered gophers were eating the roots and killing it from beneath the ground. Also, once he watered the other one more, it looked better. People say to water well before frost is expected, because cold tends to dry out plants. The black bud ends %26amp; curled leaves sound more like a fungus or parasite. (Or perhaps the plastic bag trapped in moisture and they mildewed). Pick off some sample leaves and take it to a good nursery or to the county extension office for advice. I hope that this may help you.

My mother-in-law has two beautiful oleanders in the yard. The guy who mows her lawn also cleans up around the yard, He thought the oleander was a tree and he was going to train it to grow up so he cut off the bottom branches. AHHHHHHHH!!! Will they grow out again or not? She is so sad!!!

Planting Oleander?
I want an oleander hedge. I bought some "Hardy Red Oleander" from LOWE's which is supposed to be fast growing. It says to plant 6'-10' feet apart. I want to be certain to have a solid wall so I'm planting them 6' apart. Do I measure that distance between the bases of the plants or somewhere else?

I just read White Oleander (yes, like the movie) and it was amazing. I can't even put it into words. There are just a few things I didn't quite understand....
What exactly is "oleander time"? Astrid mentions that like five times throughout the book, and I never got what it means. Is it referring to the time of the year when her mother poisoned Barry? Or the time when it's in season or something?
Also, I wondered about the choices she made. Why did she choose to go to that last foster home, the one with Yvonne and Rena and Niki? Why did she choose to live her life like that? And at the end with Paul Trout (who I adore). Why didn't she take the money that her mother could give her and live back in the states? She could have taken Paul with her, and they'd be living more comfortably.

Oleander in zone 7?
I bought some Oleander about two years ago and the first year it did great. The second year it didnt even come out of the ground and this the third year it is about 3 feet tall with only 2 shoots showing. No blooms as of yet but the Live Nursery Specialist at my local Lowes says it should bloom by the end of the summer. Does anyone have any Oleander blooming in zone 7 yet that has not been planted this season?

You might try assuring your oleander is in a sheltered place (the south side of your home, near a wall) and mulch it heavily with leaves and bark. Another option is to bring it indoors in the winter and put it in a sunroom, but then they suffer from spider mites. (By the way, oleander--the entire plant--is considered poisonous.)

Neighbor has oleander infested with caterpillars?
My neighbor, it seems, abandoned his house and has an oleander covered with caterpillars. I know these are oleander caterpillars and will attack the plant. They are beginning to come over to our house. Could these bugs attack my grass and plants? I know he has several oleanders in the back yard too.

For you to go spraying insecticides on another property is "very" illegal and could get you a trespassing charge from the rightful owner or a fine, from the Dept. Of Pesticide Regulations. The only thing you need to be responsible for is your "own" property! You can spray your shrubs with a "systemic" insecticide that will be absorbed into your own shrubs and will kill any insect that happens to begin eating or sucking on its foliage. Ortho makes a product called "Ortho Systemic Insect Killer" which controls pests for up to 3 weeks after applying. You can usually find this at the garden sections of Walmart, Home Depot or the like. You can buy the concentrate or use a hose end sprayer supplied by Ortho, which makes the application very easy to do. You can apply this about once a month for control. There is a very effective biological chemical you can spray that only affects caterpillars, not bugs, birds, or other plants/animals. It's called Bacillus thuringensis, or Bt for short. It paralyzes the caterpillar's gut so it stops eating and dies. Death is not instant, it takes a day or two...or three. If you accidently spray yourself, no problem it is nontoxic to us. It however does degrade in sunlight, so should be sprayed in the late afternoon.
You can report the house to the weed and litter department in your city and they can force the homeowner to care for the front yard, at least...and maybe the backyard.

Yellow Oleander? Small to medium street tree, tropical looking with brilliant yellow flowers.?
Saw this beautiful tree at the County Fair. The sign near the trunk said it was a "Yellow Oleander". But when I asked at two different nurserys I was told I was nuts. They said oleander is not a tree %26amp; comes only in red, pink %26amp; white. Never in yellow. I know what the shrub oleander is. This was completely different. Beautiful. I know I read the sign correctly. Anyone want to help prove I am not nuts? Thanks.

I talked my county engeneer into including them when relandscaping some county librarys back in the early 1990's. they look as good today as when they went in. i can't say the same for the other choices they made? for some unknown reason most landscape desidners always have to put Agapanthus in ever thing they design. You get one month of cool blooms %26amp; the rest of the year they look like crap. They put some in as a border around the library Yellow Oleander trees. wow, talk about a clash of color! big blue blooms %26amp; bright yellow flowers. Sure did draw attention to the new county buildings. Well, the Agapanthus are long gone, but the trees still look great. Another name for this "tree" is a lucky nut tree.
I say "tree" because it really isnt one. You can train the bush to grow like a tree.And i dont know why they call it lucky either. Very poisonous to animals,it produces a poison called glycuside which causes cardiac arrest in animals not sure what it does to humans. Hope this helps.

The plant is native to tropical America and thrives in heat but is sensitive to frost (USDA Zones 9b-11). Thevetia is used as a street tree in some parts of southern California and Florida. As a shrub, it can reach 8-10' tall and wide. When trained as a tree, it may grow 20-30' tall with an equal spread. Staking is recommended when young since the trunks tend to be quite flexible. Flowers are 2-3 inches long and range from yellow to apricot. Provide well-drained soil. Site out of strong winds (they tend to contort the tree in unattractive ways). If it does get frozen, it will regenerate from the roots and bloom the same year.
Reply:I've never heard of yellow oleander but I have seen oleander trimmed so that it grows tall to about the size of a small tree 10 or 15 feet.

Another name for this "tree" is a lucky nut tree.
I say "tree" because it really isnt one. You can train the bush to grow like a tree.And i dont know why they call it lucky either. Very poisonous to animals,it produces a poison called glycuside which causes cardiac arrest in animals not sure what it does to humans. Hope this helps.

Like true oleander, it's deadly poisonous, but, has very pretty flowers.
If you want to order one, I suggest ordering it through its species name, "Thevetia peruviana."
That way, the nursery has no excuse for screwing up with your order.

Oleander grows everywhere. It is a common landscaping plant. It is not illegal to grow it or other poisonous plants, just not smart to eat them.
Reply:Not in Brazil. In fact, they still plant this on the sidewalks, because its small and doesn't interfere with electricity stuff. There are lots of best solutions, but they keep doing it...
Reply:Never been illegal in any state I have lived. Beautiful plant. California has been planting them in the medians to help prevent out of control cars from crossing over. In Nevada, there are numerous oleanders planted by the National Park Service. Only the sap is dangerous and most of the tales about people or animals dying from it are urban legends.

It is reported that dried or wilted leaves may be slightly more palatable than fresh leaves, and the leaves are still toxic when wilted or dried. In one report with horses, it was indicated that approximately 1/4 pound of leaves (about 30 or 40 leaves) could deliver a lethal dose to an adult horse.
Clinical signs may develop rapidly, and the animal may be found dead with no prior warning. In other cases, depression coupled with gastrointestinal distress is evident: vomiting (in those species that can vomit), diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain. Irregularities in the heart rate and rhythm will occur: the heart may speed up or slow down, and beat erratically. As the toxicosis progresses, the extremities may become cold and the mucous membranes pale. Trembling and collapse can occur, followed by coma and death within a few hours.
FIRST AID: If animals are observed eating oleander, contact a veterinarian immediately. The toxin acts quickly, and is lethal in small amounts. Emergency measures may be used to empty the gastrointestinal tract of remaining plant matter, and medications may be administered to control the effects that the toxin has on the heart. Despite emergency care, the animal may still die, but the sooner treatment is begun, the better the prognosis for survival.
SAFETY IN PREPARED FEEDS: Oleander is extremely toxic, even in small quantities, and the toxin is not eliminated by drying. Therefore, feeds containing oleander are never safe for consumption.
PREVENTION: Be able to identify oleander and exercise extreme caution when pets (and humans) are in the vicinity of these plants. The plants should never be placed where animals can have contact with them.
